One of the larger members of its family, the Pine Grosbeak is a bird found across North America, and north into the mountains of western Canada and the United States. A large finch, it makes periodic winter trips into southern Canada and the northern United States. It is the largest and rarest of the "winter finches." After I found this one in Yellowstone I told a fellow photographer about it and he said he would rather photograph the grosbeak than a wolf. This must be one rare bird.
