Burrowing Owl on Rock

This is a typical hunting posture for a burrowing owl in the desert. These owls are among the smallest in North America. They live underground in burrows that have been dug out by small mammals like ground squirrels and prairie dogs. They are covered in brown spotted feathers and have long legs. They also sport distinctive white ’Äúeyebrows’Äù above bright yellow eyes.
